Promise Essay The teacher walked into the classroom. It was the first period that day. â€Å"Good morning, everyone. How was your holiday? † Mrs. Jane asked. â€Å"Great! † â€Å"Fun! † â€Å"Exciting! † Those were the words came from every student in the class describing their end-year holidays. Of course holiday is fun and interesting days for everyone. But, for Jessica, it was a boring holiday since her parents rarely spent their times with her due to their busy schedules even during her school holidays. She just kept quiet as if she did not hear when Mrs. Jane asked them. She seems hardly opened her mouth since she entering the class. After sometimes Mrs. Jane realized that Jessica disliked her school holidays. She quickly switches her topic. â€Å"Okay, now. Everyone, I’m going to introduce you to your new classmate, Tiffany,† announced Mrs. Jane. She welcomes Tiffany to the classroom. Mrs. Jane then asked her to introduce herself. After that she asked her to sit beside Jessica. â€Å"Hi, I’m Jessica. Nice to meet you,† Jessica greeted her with a broad smile. â€Å"Nice to meet you too,† Tiffany said with a broad smile too. Mrs. Jane smiled to herself when she saw that Jessica smiled broadly. Mrs. Jane felt relief knowing that Jessica was happy to have a new friend. Alright, everyone~ Let’s start our first lesson today,† Mrs. Jane told the class. The lesson for the day was very interesting as the students seemed to be enjoying the lesson. It was at about 2pm everyone was waiting for the final bell to ring that marked the end of the lesson of the day. Jessica and tiffany walked hand-in-hand on their way home. â€Å"Do you usually walk home? † Tiffany asked Jessica while walking along the corridor. â€Å"Yes. I’d rather walking than going by car,† Jessica told her. â€Å"I used to walk too,† said Tiffany. â€Å"Hey†¦ can I ask you something? † Jessica asked. â€Å"Sure. Why not? † Tiffany wondering what is she going to ask her. Can we be friend? † Jessica asked. Her face turned reddish red. Tiffany giggled. â€Å"Why are you asking that silly question? We’re already friends,† she said. â€Å"What? Really? Thanks! † Jessica said and hugged her tightly. â€Å"No problem,† Tiffany said and Jessica released the hug. â€Å"Now, let us promise,† she said. â€Å"What? † â€Å"Let’s be friend forever no matter what happen. Even if we were separated one day, we will always keep in touch, okay? † She told her. â€Å"Okay~ I promise. † Jessica said. After promising to each other, they headed to their own home. Day after day, their relationship became closer and closer. They always spent their weekend together at each other’s home. During the holiday, Jessica spent her holiday with tiffany and her family since Jessica’s parents was always busy. A few months later, Jessica parents told her that they will move overseas. Knowing this, Jessica’s tears rolling down to her cheeks. â€Å"We know you can’t separate with Tiffany. But, we have to move, dear. Anyways, you will have some new friends there,† her mother tried to console her. One day after the school was over; Jessica told tiffany that she will move to New York that evening. â€Å"Really? But, I know you will come to visit me in the future, right? Tiffany asked as her tears rolled down her cheeks. â€Å"Yes. I will,† that was all Jessica can say at that moment. They went home as usual. That evening, Tiffany went to the airport to say goodbye to Jessica. Jessica was happy to see her present at the airport and wish her happy journey. She hugged Tiffany and felt heavy to let her go. As it was already time to go to the departure hall, Tiffany loosens her hug and let her go. â€Å"Promise me that you will not cry when you arrive there and I promise to wait for you to come here,† Tiffany promised. â€Å"I promise. And, I promise I will be back,† Jessica told her. Alright, girls. It’s time to go and say goodbye,† Jessica’s mother said to them. â€Å"Okay, mom. † Jessica said. Then, they bid their farewell. Two years later, Tiffany pursued her study in college. Even though they were separated, they always keep in touch through social network and phone call. Since Jessica was busy with her college activities, she didn’t have enough time to go back to Canada. But, she still kept her promise. She told Tiffany that she will be back next week. Tiffany was so delighted to hear the news. Two weeks later, but Jessica still not coming back. She was very disappointed and upset with Jessica. One day, Jessica’s mother went to Tiffany’s house. She told Tiffany why Jessica will not come. She told her that Jessica died in a car accident while on her way to the airport two weeks ago. â€Å"No! That shouldn’t be! She won’t leave me! † Tiffany cried out loudly. She feels that she can’t bear it anymore. Her mother and Jessica’s mother tried to console her. Tiffany went to New York that night. Upon arriving at New York, she went to Jessica’s grave. Tears gushing out of her eyes until she felt that no more tears came out. It’s been two years after Jessica’s death; Tiffany soon became a famous singer as they promise in the past.

Fears in The Most Dangerous Game   [ADM1]  Ã‚      All around it was quiet.   [ADM2]The birds were chirping and the leaves were blowing.   Suddenly, a man fled from the brush, holding only a knife in his right hand.   After the fleeing man had ran some distance, another man came out of the brush holding a revolver.   This man walked calmly after the fleeing man not worried that the he would escape.   The old, erect man stopped, and loaded his revolver.   He then took aim, shot a round and hit the fleeing man just as he turned around.   The man dropped as he died instantly.   The old man then walked over to the game he had just killed, grabbed the body by the shirt, and dragged the body into the brush.   Richard Connell's The Most Dangerous Game is a story based on a man who thrives for hunting humans[ADM3].   The way Connell wrote this short story reveals some characteristics about him.   The Most Dangerous Game is a psychological story about the author facing and overcoming fear. [ADM4] The general's eyes had left the ground and were traveling inch by inch up the tree.   Rainsford froze there, every muscle tensed for a spring.   But the sharp eyes of the hunter stopped before they reached the limb where Rainsford lay; a smile spread over his brown face.   This story is filled with the same type of fear Connell experienced in his life.   Perhaps he felt 'hunted' at one point in his life and decided he had to run away from all the pain and anger.   For instance, his father may have been abusive to him, so he decided to run away from the fear of being emotionally as well as physically hurt[ADM5].   Rainsford slid down the tree and struck off again into the woods...   Following the trail with the sureness of a bloodhound came General Zaroff.   Connell ran and ran and ran, but no matter how far he ran, his fears were always behind him.   Connell would soon figure out what to do. [ADM6]   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Connell also showed the ability to overcome his fears.   At the end of the story, Rainsford confronts Zaroff in Zaroff's own bedroom.   Zaroff offers a truce, but Rainsford does not accept and they fight until the death.   Rainsford had successfully faced Zaroff, his fear.[ADM7]   Connell is showing that he overcame the fears he had in his life by facing them with confidence.

German Culture: Past and Present Essay

German Culture: Past and Present is a book written by Ernest Belfort Bax. It was originally published in 1915 by McBride, Nast, & Company of New York. The current edition most widely circulated was published by Kessinger Publications, LLC, Kila, MT, in 2008. Kessinger Publications specialize in reprints of old books that are public domain and maintains copyright over the works. Bax was born in Britain and was a socialist journalist and philosopher. Ironically his political view as a socialist was important to this book. It assisted him in his efforts to observe German society of the period covered as the governments of the various feudal and bureaucratic forms have always leaned toward socialism. His credentials that add authority to writing this particular book include his studying of German philosophy while actually living in Germany. This gave him a close proximity to the birthplaces of German culture and thought – necessary prerequisites for the preparation of this book. Additionally his familiarity with the German language offer significance to his readers as he interprets historical documents for them. The thesis of this book is to provide a fairly detailed overview of the social and intellectual development of German culture from the medieval period all the way to the modern times (keeping in mind that the ‘modern times’ to this author extended only to the early 1900s). Its secondary point is the more thorough exposition of the earlier part of the culture nearly at the expense of the later period. The author felt that less was known about that era in German history as compared to the modern times and wished to begin to educate ‘modern’ readers about that important foundation. His concern reflected in this thesis is that the earlier times and its documents are difficult to access and properly read, while the times closer to the modern day have been reflected in more widely available forms. Bax develops his thesis in chronological fashion and depends heavily upon some of his earlier writings on the history of Germany. This consolidates his earlier views in one tome which can be more easily understood when presented together in this order. In addition to the simple chronological development of his thesis, Bax refers frequently to the thorough historical treatment of the times as opposed to the personality centered treatment. He supports his thesis by disproving the personality style by demonstrating the broader historical style. Examples include dismissing the Martin Luther-focused interpretation of the Reformation, instead offering the larger events and people that surrounded those events (p. 43). Bax’s commentary on the significance of culture upon the success and failure of individuals begins with Martin Luther and the Reformation. By concentrating on the surrounding historical events and people, he sets the stage for the influences beyond the personalities that enabled their success – in the case of Luther. Similarly Bax describes the success of the Peasant’s Rebellion/War as being dependent upon the culture created by earlier revolts like Franz Sickingen’s (p. 117). These two examples effectively show how Bax as an author ensures that the cultural parts of the book are always the first and foremost consideration; the impact this culture had upon events and people is always secondary to that thought. It is extremely difficult to argue with Bax’s thesis. It is entirely an objective and well ordered writing of a lengthy period of German history. In particular, the reliance of individuals and events upon the general developing culture of the times leaves little room to doubt his conclusions. It is a well presented thesis and the only detriment to it may be its long-windedness. That same breadth and pace, however, also lend academic credence to the book as a whole. ? References Bax, E. B. Problems with the Three Strikes Legislation Cornelius Morgan CRJ 125: Criminology (W04) November 15, 2015 Abstract: In 1994 Polly Klaas was kidnapped from a slumber party at her home in California and later murdered by Richard Allen Davis who already had 2 prior convictions for kidnapping on his record. The public was outraged that a repeat offender was able to attack again. Politicians catered to this outrage and sold the public on a bill that would repeat offenders off the streets for good with the three strikes and you’re out legislation. As the name suggests, a criminal would have to have been convicted 2 times previously to be charged with the three strikes law. It also insinuated that these repeat offenders would be â€Å"violent† offenders as well. However, that was not always the case. This paper looks at some of the problems with the three strikes legislation and how it affects different parties such as nonviolent offenders, the department of corrections system, the court system, and the public in general. The â€Å"three strikes and you’re out† law is in effect in different states around the country.
