Environmental Ethics Environmental ethics is that branch of philosophy dealing with the major ethical questions regarding the relationships between humans and the environment. This includes issues such as biodiversity, wildlife management, ecological preservation, hunting practices, farming techniques, and food regulations. Emergence of the Field Environmental ethics emerged as a distinct field in in early 1970s. Among its driving forces were the environmental concerns regarding the dependability of our society on natural resources as well as the threat that our use of those resources poses to the integrity of the ecosystem; it should also be noted that the increased attention to an ecological perspective on life was promotedâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Cattle, pork, and chicken farms in contemporary America are an example of the unjustified torturing that humans inflict over other species in order to provide cheap foods. In Animal Liberation Singer advocates vegetarianism as a antidote to the rampant speciesism of our society. It is unethical to inflict unnecessary sufferance, so we should avoid it by all means that are necessary to us. Vegetarianism seems to be the best solution, according to Singer. Singerââ¬â¢s argument has been criticized under several points. For example, eating plants does not imply that no animal sufferance will be involved, as other animals may depend on those plants for their survival. So, a deer may use a crop field to hide its children so that, once the crops are harvested, the childrenââ¬â¢s life will be at risk. There is no free lunch, really. Nonetheless, Singerââ¬â¢s argument contributed to show the significance of a non-anthropocentric ethical perspective to Western societies. The needs for such a perspective are not just rooted in our diets, but more generally in our relationship to the environment. Letââ¬â¢s see an example of this sort. Chicago free essay sample
Prohibition-era musical based on a 1926 play of female criminals in Chicago. It is a tale of sin, corruption, knockout dancing, and edge-of-your-story showstoppers that explore feminism as well as the relationship between sex and marriage. Not only does it entail social issues, but the changes in theatre too. Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly are main characters of the musical. The plot follows them throughout their journey to freedom desperately trying to keep fame to their names with scandals and drama. (1920s) Original: Based on a 1926 play by Maurine Dallas Watkins. A claimed reason for its more recent success is due to the way she crafted the play, with musical numbers as the plot.à Watkinââ¬â¢s set the foundation on the Kander and Ebb production because she made personal. Events that occurred within the musical, are historical events that actually happened in Chicago that she wrote about first hand as a reporter in the 1920s. We will write a custom essay sample on Chicago or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page It is composed in the 1920s vaudeville style, but modernized by the issues at hand. The issues of society along with the feminist views exhibit Chicagoââ¬â¢s impact in the history of musical theatre. Emphasized show-biz and media, showing its large role in the 1970s happenings. The vaudeville style effected the music heavily. Stylistically, vaudeville brings not only drama, but comedy in the duration of the short acts. All That Jazz is an example of this. Everything Comes Together: The lyrics work beautifully with the choreography to create the thematic essence that is necessary in a successful satirical musical. The plot is intricately intertwined with these two aspects to emphasize its uniqueness. The dancing seems more modern whereas the music is classic jazz, but it adds to the originality that is Chicago. It is a timeless musical. Humor. The relationships between men and women within the play are being implicitly exhibited. Creative Team: Witty lyrics, funky rhythms, jazzy Risk-aye choreography for the time frame it was set in. Dancing: sexual and expressive The creators carefully seleted the cast members in order to pull off this special masterpiece. Vaudeville was a theatrical genre of variety entertainment popular in the United States and Canada from the early 1880s until the early 1930s. Each performance was made up of a series of separate, unrelated acts grouped together on a common bill. Roxie: Itââ¬â¢s about her claim to fame. ââ¬Å"Who says that murderââ¬â¢s not an art,â⬠this line emphasizes the thought which, during this time period, many women felt that murder was not all that bad. It was justifiable. Killing Fred Casely is what initially brought her publicity. Moreover, Roxie is singing about how everyone is going to know her; she will be a celebrity with a lot of money. In the song she says the reason everyone love to watch because they ââ¬Å"never got enough love in their childhood,â⬠meaning that they share a twisted acceptance of rebellion. The song shows how celebrity hungry and selfish she is in general. Towards the end of the number she references Sophie Tucker, a former vaudevillian, saying how she will be enraged to see Roxieââ¬â¢s name has more of an effect than hers. This aspect of the song shows the harsh side of show business and interestingly enough she tells the truth in the song, which contrasts the theme of corruption. All That Ja zz: ATJ is a clever, brassy jazz song that introduces the cultural changes going on in Chicago. The music consists of mostly brass instruments, for impact. Velma Kelly sings about the theme of liberation of women. Adultery, showing skin, exotic dancing, and short hair are all things that were arising. Allà That Jazz is performed right after Velma murders her sister and husband and it vocalizes her new independence as a women. The choreography along with the lyrics showcase how suggestive and sexual the song is towards the audience. Mr. Cellophane: Roxieââ¬â¢s husband, Amos, sulks about how not only his wife, but everyone he comes to know, hardly notices him. He feels invisible, like cellophane. His character represents the little people that tend to be forgotten once fame comes into the picture. Amos showed Roxie all the attention she craves, but it goes by unappreciated and unrecognized.

Throughout The United States It Has Been Stated That Between 355,000
Throughout the United States it has been stated that between ?355,000 and 445,000? (Resaner) people are homeless everyday and night. Homelessness is something that affects people of all ages, races, backgrounds and religions. The problem of homelessness is not something that only happens in the large cities, it happens everywhere. There are people with many different problems that force then to become homeless. They do however all have one thing in common they have nowhere to live. Some factors that contribute to homeless in America that make it unpreventable are the lack of education, economic factors and mental illness. Lack of education is something that is looked down upon in today?s society. The more education, the better a person will be in the work force. Children are taught from a very young age to stay in school, however a good number of then will not finish. From making that one decision children?s lives will be changed forever. Some will make it and some will end up with no where to turn. Nearly ?twenty six percent? (Nichelason 17) of our homeless population are people under the age on eighteen years old. These young kids have no education and in return no way to provide for themselves. So many of them turn to illegal activities to try and better their lives. If the children do have a family their situation is not much better without an education. Most homeless families do not stay in one place very long so the children can not attend school. The parents often need the children to work to help provide for the family. For adults the average that an illiterate adult will earn is ?forty-two pe rcent less? (Resaner 89) then a high school graduate. Being an illiterate person causes a lot of trouble since they can not read newspapers, get a drivers license or even attempt to fill out a job application. The lack of education for our homeless is a key factor in what is bringing then down to that level. Even if we promote staying in school and push our kids to the limit there are still factors that make them not finish. Lack of education is one main reason that homelessness can not be prevented. Some of our homeless did receive an education but because of other factors in their life found themselves on the streets. One of these factors is the economic factors in the United States. People today are also becoming homeless because of economic factors. Good people with education?s are becoming part of the homeless problem. More then ?eight million people are unemployed and without benefits? (Rossi 37). Those are people who are spending every last penny they have to prevent themselves from being a statistic. However, most within a few months will have no choice but to turn to the streets. People losing jobs is something that happens everyday around the United States. Many of the bigger manufacturing industries and other companies around America have had to close due to the economic difficulties. Companies today also like to save as much money as possible so many have relocated to countries where it is cheaper to do business. ?Every year since the 1970?s two million American?s have lost their jobs due to economic factors? (Ropars 52). From the companies closing and moving out of the country it makes it very hard for people who want to work to find a job. This is a h uge problem in the Unites States and is a problem that can not be solved. So since the problem of ecomonic factors can not be soved, neither can homlessness. It can not be solved because the companies will continue to go where the money is for them. Along with lack of education and economic factors another key factor of why homelessness can not be prevented is mental illness. Mentally ill men and women make up nearly ?66 percent? (Rasaner 30) of those homeless living on the streets around the United States. ?In 1989, scientists at John Hopkins University found that 42 percent of homeless men and 49 percent of homeless women studied had serious mental illnesses? (Resaner 30). Even though there is medicine and hospitals where most of the illnesses

njsp profiling essays
njsp profiling essays NEW JERSEY STATE POLICE RACIAL PROFILING Racial profiling is a law enforcement strategy that encourages police officers to stop and question African Americans simply because of their race. Although not raised as a major issue in the courtroom during the trial of the four police officers who shot Amadou Diallo (who were acquitted in February), racial profiling is often employed by police, officially and unofficially, and was likely a factor in the police shooting of Diallo. Racial profiling took off during the highly publicized explosion of crack cocaine in inner-city neighborhoods in the 1980s, which bolstered the perception of drugs as a black problem even though statistics showed most cocaine users were white. Drug enforcement agencies began using racial profiling to "sweep" neighborhoods and in arresting disproportionate numbers of African Americans for drug related offenses. A profile of potential drug users and sellers was developed to assist policemen in picking out and questioning likely offenders. These profiles continue to be used by law enforcement in combating crime. Recent high profile cases and studies of racial profiling in New Jersey and Maryland prompted Congress to introduce the Traffic Stops Statistics Study Act of 1999, directing Attorney General Janet Reno to conduct a nationwide study of the race of drivers who are stopped by law enforcement. Congress is expected to vote on the bill later this year. The current debate on racial profiling has been tied to allegations of police brutality and institutional racism. In response to one shooting of an unarmed black man by a police officer, video cameras were installed in police cruisers in Montgomery and Prince George's counties in Maryland. A four-year investigation of alleged police brutality in Montgomery County by the Department of Justice resulted in demands that officers must ask drivers their age, sex and race, and then compile that data for r...

Comprehensive Assessment of Dementia Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Comprehensive Assessment of Dementia - Essay Example In order to develop an effective care plan for the patient, the following must be determined about the patient: Presenting Problem The nurse would collect information on the patientââ¬â¢s dementia, including signs and symptoms of the disease. Moreover, the nurse should identify the aspects of the patientââ¬â¢s life that have been affected by dementia (Smith and Buckwalter, 2005). History Information about the events prior to the dementia, and any records that may lead to a clear picture of underlying factors should be collected. For instance, these records would help to point out if the cause of the dementia is a factor that can be controlled or if the situation cannot be reversed (Nhs.uk, 2010). Medical Status This would indicate if the patient has had any prior treatment for the condition, and if the condition has been improving, deteriorating, or has not been affected by the treatment. This would enable the nurse to decide if the patient needs alternative medication or needs to first complete the current regimen. Routine tests like haematology, thyroid function tests, biochemistry tests and serology should be used as indicators of physiological causes and results of the condition. Specific tests like memory assessment should point out the exact condition of the patient based on tests that indicate current body function; these tests include AMTS, MMSC, 3MS, and CASI (Teng and Chui, 2007). Day-to-Day Functioning This analysis helps to determine if the patient needs further supportive care in addition to medication, or medication is enough to get the patient to live independently and productively. For instance, the patient should be assessed for inconsistencies in cognitive function including poor judgment, memory lapses and loss of reasoning capacity (Gleason, 2003). Support A patient needs support from family and friends, religious and community groups, and from social care service institutions. The nurse has to determine if these stakeholders support t he patient as is necessary to aid in the dementia control efforts (Shub and Kunik, 2009). The nurse can then incorporate participation of family and friends in order to accelerate and improve the efficiency and effectiveness of intervention measures. Evidence of Abuse or Neglect The patient should be assessed for any evidence of mistreatment, including identification of the nature of the mistreatment, if possible (Karlawish and Clark, 2003). This is important in that the patient is taken to an environment that does not expose them to abuse or neglect, which may worsen the condition. Detailed Care Plan to Guide Jackââ¬â¢s Care Interventions for patients with dementia are focused on three main pathologies of the condition; they include interventions for cognitive disorders, intervention for non-cognitive disorders, and interventions for emotional disorders. One or a combination of these interventions should be used depending on the condition of the patient. Interventions for Cognit ive Symptoms These are divided into pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions; depending on the condition of the patient and underlying functions, the latter are the more recommended of these interventions.
